The Predecessor built a system that made Sombra easier to endure. The workshop still carries the shape of that decision—and may be teaching you to repeat it.
Old records, first-craft fragments, unusual customers, and places that should not share a map suggest that Thoughtsmithing has never been only a village trade.
The player can follow that pressure without receiving a cosmology lecture. Reverie Works keeps its deepest truths in objects, absences, repeated language, and the uncomfortable similarity between a broken system and a successful one.
A town can be stable because it is well. A town can also be stable because nobody is allowed to feel enough to leave.
Inheritance
The workshop remembers its previous answer.
The Predecessor manufactured relief at scale. Their work helped people. It also made difficult feelings less legible, and left Sombra vulnerable to anyone offering certainty in their place.
You inherit their stations, their reputation, and an unfinished sentence embedded in the town. The central question is not whether the Predecessor was evil. It is whether care becomes dangerous when it cannot tolerate what hurts.
Restoration
Make the option. Leave the choice.
Late Thoughtsmithing can do something different from continuation. A restorative object does not erase a bargain, reverse a loss, or force catharsis. It gives a person an honest choice where choice had been surrendered.
That distinction connects every part of the game: emotion systems, crafting quality, relationships, exploration, and the quiet horror beneath Sombra’s desktop wallpaper.
