04 / The pilot who always returns
THE PILOT WHO ALWAYS RETURNS
The body is new. The Continuity record says the pilot returned. She has never had reason to call herself anyone else.
She knows she is a clone. She also knows she is the pilot who died. Continuity doctrine sees no contradiction: an approved record carries legal identity, operational memory, trained reflexes, and the person those things describe into a viable new body.
Each awakening feels like being brought back because she remembers the approach, the impact, and the unfinished intention. The Resistance records a return. She opens her eyes and continues the sentence.

New body. Same pilot. Unfinished war.

Continuity Is a Military Fact
The approved Continuity record preserves the identity the Resistance can verify: name, service, reflexes, memory, loyalties, and operational authority. Reinstantiation returns that record to duty after death makes the previous body unusable.
The process has trauma. Dreams arrive with the wrong stars. Battles contradict one another at the edges. Familiar voices sometimes speak words nobody remembers saying. Medics classify the noise as reinstantiation stress, combat damage, or temporal contamination from a war that has repeated too long.

A Symbol with a Flight Schedule
To the Resistance, her return proves that sacrifice can be answered. To commanders, it is an asset that can cross experience between offensives. To civilians, it is a promise that the Empire has failed to kill the future.
She carries all three meanings while the movement splinters around her. Some cells want a liberator, some want a commander, and some want the Throne destroyed before anyone can claim it.

The Person She Recognizes
Continuity gives her memory, but the run gives her decisions. Each campaign changes whom she trusts, which compromises she accepts, and what kind of ruler she believes she could become.
The central question is not whether she returned. For her, that is settled. The question is what survival has asked her to become.
